Underground mining operations are complex and inherently hard to visualise due to the lack of physical access. Within the block cave mining method which is commonly used for copper extraction, there is a lot of critical ground movement and geotechnical conditions that need to be managed. The management of these conditions involves the collection and interpretation of a large variety of data. This includes data recorded on different time scales (velocity), of large quantities (volume) and of different spatial formats (variety), leading to a Big Data problem. A solution was developed with the University of New South Wales to bring these data sets together through their links in space and time through the use of virtual reality scientific visualisation.
“Vantage Interactive in collaboration with UNSW’s School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering have developed the world-leading modulus in VR and AR platforms for the mining and energy industries. This has been a fantastic partnership for us, our current/future students and community as a whole.”

“Vantage bring a new realism to everything they do. People are used to video game graphics. They don’t take it seriously.
The first time I went into Vantage’s mine simulation, every time a roof bolt came up, I ducked my head.”
