Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, accounting for around 80% of all newly diagnosed cancers in the country. It is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer.
Shade Smart is a serious game that was developed as a prototype for the Cancer Council to raise awareness of this problem. Through gamification and repetition, kids are subconsciously taught to protect their skin from the sun. Collect sunscreen, hide in the shade and avoid the nasty melanomas!
This type of game-based learning makes education fun and is very engaging for students. Being able to deploy these experiences for students to use on their own devices at home makes for great homework and allows classroom time to be used for reflection.
